The Jammu and Kashmir government is likely to float a tender in December this year seeking bids from power companies for pre-qualification to develop the 400-MW Karthai hydro electric power project in the state. "The capacity of the Karthai-I hydro electric power (HEP) project is likely to go up from 240 MW to 400 MW. Pre-Qualification of Bids (PQB) are likely to be issued next month," Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation (JKPDC) Managing Director Shaleen Kabra said here.

In addition, a proposal for the 990-MW Karthai-II unit is in advanced stages of examination, he said.

The JKPDC Managing Director informed the board about plans for capacity addition of 4,000 MW in the state through major projects taken up by the corporation.

He gave details of the tendering process for various projects and said the tendering process for three projects -- the 93-MW New Ganderbal, 48-MW Lower Kalnai and 60-MW Parnai projects -- commenced in July, 2011.

He also indicated at a likely upward revision of the capacity of the Sawlakote HEP in view of extensive power potential studies carried out recently.

He also said the assessed capacity of the Indus River has been increased from earlier 182 MW to 760 MW following a study by JKSPDC.
